Colonial Beach, Virginia
Have you ever been to Colonial Beach, Virginia? It is a riverside resort town with the second-longest public beach in the state. It would be great to hear your opinions and comments if you have visited there.
Colonial Mentality of the Filipinos
A while ago, me and the kid that I'm tutoring had some nice conversation regarding her assignment in Civics. It's about the colonial mentality of the Filipinos. I asked her about her opinion regarding the topic. According to the kid, it happens when we prefer to use the things or products that comes from other countries rather than those locally made. She said that a lot of us have strong colonial mentality, preferring much on using imported products. Her last words was that these things doesn't help on the growth of the country. I noticed myself nodding with what she's saying and agreeing with her point. What is your opinion regarding this? Do you also agree that Filipinos really have strong colonial mentality?
have you ever been to the Colonial Theatre in Boston?
My best friend & I are going to go to see RENT at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. We're hoping to be able to stay overnight so what we're hoping to do is to check into a hotel and be able to walk from the hotel to the Colonial Theatre and maybe hit some bars in the area as well (may as well get the BEST out of Boston, right?). BUT, we've never been there so we don't know what's there.Anyone familiar with the area? What are some local hotels and bars? IS there anything in walking distance to the Theatre?
What are the pros and cons of colonial mentality?
Colonial mentality has become very famous in this century. As a superpower nation, USA has influenced many people and instilled in their minds how powerful they are. What are your insights about colonial mentality? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of colonial mentality?Happy posting.
Havaianas, Ipanemas......Colonial Mentality
There are so many things I've pondered today and some of them are things I can't simply leave without sharing. I remembered a blog being posted in Multiply about Havaianas vs. Local flip-flops (from Phil. specifically those we used to wear as a child and owned, I have many of em even used them in playing "bato-lata" and the same slippers that our parents used to slap and spank till our butts become red if we're caught being naughty LOL). Anyway, I can recall the time where Havaianas (high quality flip-flops from Brazil) is soooooooooooo "IN" and the latest trend. It is also the time when my best friend came back in Philippines for a vacation. We both love fashion so while we were both pouring in the malls and talk about the latest trends, I opened up to her about wanting to own Havaianas. It is also the time wherein these flip-flops from abroad are soooooo expensive (about 1000 plus in Phil. pesos). She asked me on why I should buy something as expensive as that when these flip-flops from Brazil were used as home slippers (the same purpose of our own local slippers in Phil.) She further elaborated that on the price alone, she can now buy an assortment of local flipflops in...

Iraq - A Neo-Colonial Adventure
This article from the UK newspaper The Guardian (which is very popular in Ohio, apparently) draws a stunning parallel between the invasion of Iraq, and British crimes in its former colonies.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The colonial precedent The growing brutality and deception of the Iraq war mirrors Britain's recent imperial historyMark Curtis Tuesday October 26, 2004The GuardianThe redeployment of British forces in Iraq to support a US assault on Falluja marks another stage in a creeping return to the colonial era, when popular revolts against occupation were routinely suppressed by overwhelming force. These past episodes, revealed in declassified British government files, provide numerous parallels with Iraq, and suggest a pattern of future blunders and atrocities. Those in Britain who like to regard more recent military interventions as humanitarian might dwell on those parallels as the latest phase of the Iraq war unfolds. British ministers' claim to be defending civilisation against barbarity in Iraq finds a powerful echo in 1950s Kenya, when Britain sought to smash an uprising against colonial rule....
Colonial Language in Contemporary America
We have been made familiar with rural American speech patterns, usually negatively, through television and movies. Classic pictures like the Grapes of Wrath, the Egg and I, and Deliverance, exposed us to the ways of rural Appalachia and the mid-west. We have seen and heard all sorts of colloquialisms and most commonly we have come to see them as rooted in backwardness. But if the truth be known, it can be traced to a time when these phrases and speech patterns were used by none other than the Dutch and English royal families. In what is known as the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, there still exists in ever increasingly small and isolated pockets, vestiges of an almost dead language called the "Jersey Dutch". Beginning with Hudson's journey up the river which now bears his name, in 1609, this region was settled by the Dutch. Many family, village, and street names still reflect this heritage even after nearly four centuries. One small example is a neighborhood in the Town of Haverstraw (incorporated in 1666) called "Calico Hill". It is reported by historian Wilfred Blanche Talman (himself a descendant of Dutch settlers), that it came by this name from the...
